Port Merion

The famous Italian style Welsh village Portmeirion was the site of Susan Williams-Ellis' first shop in the 1960's, where she began selling china that she had designed to harmonize with the village. With her reputation for originality, her pottery soon became collectable, leading to the acquisition of two small pottery firms. In 1972 she designed Botanic garden, which soon becamea world wide best selling dinnerware design followed after a few years by the popular 'Pomona' design, named after the ancient goddess of fruit. The beauty of the Portmeirion china collection of dinnerware, giftware and cookware, stems from Susan Williams-Ellis' ability to design and model shapes that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, Susan has always expected her china designs, both shapes and pattern, to fit comfortably with everyday life. Since the 1960's Susan has created all the shapes by turning the originals by hand from which the moulds were produced. The design department continues to create new china products, shapes and innovative ranges (some of which are now designed by Susan's daughters) under the watchful eye of Susan, with the modelling department maintaining the highest standard of design. Portmeirion dinnerware and cookware are often referred to as 'Portmeirion china' when in fact the most popular Botanic Garden and Pomona patterns are made of two types of ceramic depending on their function: Stoneware - This vitreous (non-porous) pottery has been specifically designed to perform satisfactorily at the higher range of temperatures that are normally employed for cooking. Portmerion Stoneware is capable, therefore, of being used at oven temperatures of up to 200 degrees centigrade and is used to manufacture all cookware. Earthenware - This pottery will perform satisfactorily at the lower range of temperatures normally employed for cooking. Portmeirion Earthenware is capable of being used at oven temperatures of up to 170 degrees centigrade and is used on the majority of tableware.
